A fantastic Art & Craft Show

The last painting has been packed away, the craft collected, the prize winners awarded, the raffle drawn and the evaluation completed for the 2018 Art & Craft Show.

Over 200 people attended the Art & Craft Show on the last weekend in June. The happy

and social affair saw local artists celebrated with the majority of the works coming from the Westlake area.

It was a tribute to the talent that exists within our community, to celebrate this and the completion of the Threatened Species project at our local hall was really special.

Sixty people who enjoyed socializing, culinary treats and wine supplied by Carey Bay Cellars attended opening night.

Greg Piper MP officially opened the Art & Craft show and recognised the efforts of

the Coal Point Progress Association in completing the six-year Threatened Species Last Stand on the Coal Point Peninsula project and compiling a collection of high quality art works for the show. 

Mark Kempton, Hunter Wetlands artistic director and artist Liz Crane judged the 16 entries for the Threatened Species Award and awarded the $700 Winner to ‘Here We Come’ by Gail Dawkins a watercolour painting. The judges also recognised two Highly Commended artworks ‘Squirrel Glider’ by Chris Marcar a needle-felted craftwork, and ‘Black-eyed susan’ by Kerrie Marshall a watercolour/pencil artwork. 

The lucky door prize, Hugh Cross’ watercolour, On the lookout- King Edward Park, was won by Ms Elton. 

Over the weekend 15 of the 97 artworks were sold along with over $1000 of craft items, a really great outcome for local artists.

The event wrapped up with the awarding of the $300 People’s Choice Award, by popular vote, to Sue Gilbert for her oil painting ‘Nature’s Light’ and the drawing of the raffle. 

The 1st prize, sponsored by Toronto First National, a night at Bronte House and dinner in Morpeth, was won by Mrs Lawrenson .

The 2nd prize, a donated Nova Cruise was won by Mr Robinson.

The 3rd prize donated by Hughzies Lakeside Brasserie & Bunnings was won by Mr Gretch.

It was a great community event made possible by the dedication of wonderful volunteers and the support of local businesses. 

To make the event happen 24 volunteers contributed 550 hours to set up, maintain and pack up the show and another 500 hours went into planning the event. Over $5000 of sponsorship was received. The goal of the show was to have a social event to mark the completion of a major project whilst providing an opportunity to celebrate local artists…we definitely achieved this.

The social benefits of the show have renewed enthusiasm for more community activities to be held at Progress Hall, the next Art & Craft show is in the wind for 2021.

Art & Craft Show...One week to go

There will be plenty of art, an abundance of craft and a congregation of community folk who you haven’t

seen for a while but will definitely enjoy catching up with.

The Opening Night of the Art & Craft Show is a great community event, it’s one week away on Friday 29^thJune from 7:30pm.

To ease congestion at the front door and assist with catering it would be very helpful if you could purchase your tickets before hand from Eventbrite  or let Barbara (m: 0409 839 428) know. Of course you’ll be able to pay at the door on the night as well. 

The Opening Night $10 entry fee gives you the chance to leisurely peruse the art works on display with a free wine and canapés to assist in exploring the artistic merit. Many artists will also be present to discuss their work, which is all for sale. You'll also receive a ticket for the lucky door prize, a watercolour by the award winning local artist, Hugh Cross.

The Art & Craft show will be the last event to wrap up the Threatened Species project, it was also the first event in 2012 when the project was officially launched. A hall full of entries have been received and a dozen pieces entered for the $700 threatened species prize.

CPPA Art & Craft Show

The paint is drying and the craft glue setting as entries are rolling in for the 2018 Art & Craft show being held on the 29th June-1st July.

The celebration of community artistic talent and environmental endeavours will see Progress Hall brimming with biodiversity as the $700 Threatened Species prize aims to lure artwork depicting the

Opening Night 29th June

If you’re looking to add to your art collection or acquire a uniquely crafted gift, Opening Night on the 29th June is when the majority of sales take place. 

The happy hive of activity that creates the buzz of excitement as artists and community mingle is both socially and creatively satisfying. This local community event is a happy time at the Hall and fulfils the intent of the building as a community space for local gatherings. Opening night tickets can be purchased online via Eventbrite or booked and paid for on the night by sending an email to artandcraftcppa@gmail.com or ring Barbara 0409 839 428 .

Volunteers Needed

Whilst the volunteer Arts and Craft committee have been beavering away for months, to make the event a success more volunteers will be needed leading up to and during the event. 

Volunteers will be needed to assist with setting up the hall, decorating the hall, hanging the artwork, running the café, assisting with sales, keeping a watchful eye on items, meeting and greeting, selling raffle tickets and a few jobs as yet unthought of. 

If you would like to volunteer any time from Wednesday 27th June to Sunday 1st July please contact Barbara with your details and we’ll circulate a roster.

Art & Craft Show Opening Night

Opening Night is on Friday 29th June, 7:30-10:30pm, it’s a wonderfully social occasion with opportunities to obtain some collectibles and taste some delectables.

Opening night is an opportunity to connect with other members of the local and artistic community, acquire some exceptional art and quality craft and celebrate the completion of the Threatened Species Last Stand project.

The $10 entry fee will gain you some canapés to tantalise the tastebuds and a complimentary beverage, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Carey Bay Cellars. The hall has a limited capacity and bookings will be essential.

Art & Craft Awareness

The Art & Craft show preparations are moving along at a fast and furious pace. The Opening Night caterer is secured and the beverages are being sponsored by Carey Bay Cellars.

There is $1000 of prize money on offer, $700 to celebrate the threatened species and local flora and fauna in our community and a $300 People’s Choice.

Guest artists Stephen Cassettari, Geoff Davis and Hugh Cross have been secured to showcase their talents and share some tips throughout the weekend and raffle prizes are rolling in.

The Art & Craft Show is a very social occasion, an opportunity to catch up with friends, support local artists and get warm in winter.

Proceeds will go towards the supporting the local landcare group to continue caring for the local bushland that creates a common connection throughout our community.

TSLS To-do

The six-year Threatened Species Last Stand on the Coal Point Peninsula project (TSLS) is on the last leg, with the project completion date of 30/6/18. There are some activities that are already completed, still quite a few activities to be enjoyed and of course there will be some that keep on going on after the TSLS project finishes.

The Summer survey was completed on 22/1/18 by the adventuresome avian expert Tom Clarke.

Tom’s consistency and commitment to the project has been commendable, as are his reports all 23 of them! There is final report to come which will be looking at any trends and summarising the information collected over the past six years. If you are avian-orientated and would like to continue with any of the surveys please contact the CPPA, Tom is keen to share his process.

The Summer Survey Highlights included:

• The uncommon record of White-throated Needletails, at least 14 individuals could be accounted for travelling directly overhead and not too far above the canopy. These birds appeared to be following the ridge from Stansfield Reserve to Carey Bay as they passed by. It is interesting to note that this species was also recorded at this site in April 2017; that would have been right at the end of the previous season before they headed back to Northern Asia.
• Some indications of breeding success were noted with two separate sightings of juvenile Dollarbird and a Grey Butcherbird family group consisting of two adults and a very dependent fledgling at Stansfield Reserve. Grey Butcherbirds have nested in the Stansfield (non-burn) area several times over the course of the surveys. Both juvenile Dollarbirds were found sitting quietly with no hint (you cannot mistake their calls) of parent birds at all. Perhaps they were taking it easy in the heat also.
• The most widely recorded species for these surveys were Rainbow Lorikeets, Noisy Miner and Grey Butcherbird. They were recorded at every survey site and this is hardly surprising of course. Over the last five years, 22 rounds of formal surveys have been completed and the dominance of these birds is strongly confirmed on every occasion. With regards the honeyeaters, it is almost a complete shut-out for the smaller less-aggressive birds.

Another tick on the TSLS to-do list has been for the professional bush regeneration support provided by LMCC’s Natural Areas crew. 

Over the summer they have spent four days building on the success of the April 2016 burn at Stansfield Reserve, targeting woody weeds such as Ochna- Mickey Mouse plant, a garden escape, that has survived and thrived. The team of four also spent four days at Hampton Street Link focussed on the ‘heavy lifting’ of Lantana removal and Cassia control (another garden escape). This work is preparing the ground for the National Tree Day planting that is planned for May 20th to reinstate the rainforest remnants and kickstart the recovery of the ground covers.

The support of the LMCC Natural Areas Team has been greatly appreciated, their willingness to share their knowledge and their enthusiasm for undertaking the physically demanding work has helped the local landcare group to keep their spirits and enjoyment of bushland activities high.

A fun-filled five months is ahead with projects on the go including the mega mural on the Hunter Water Reservoir, an Awesome Art & Craft show and Plant-pack purchases.

Enthusiastic street artists have already begun preparing the surface of the reservoir and Hunter Local Land Services recently awarded the CPPA a grant to cover the Youth Week mural completion celebration on 17/4/18. Throughout February we’ll be lining up the local schools, and community artists to sort out how the space can be used. 
In March it will be cans in hand to put the artwork out there. A mural webpagehas been set up which lists the local plants and animals that can be emblazoned upon the water tank walls. If you’re keen to pick a subject and practice your style there’s quite a few to choose from. A facebook page is being set up by Graffiti Dan, the street artist mentor overseeing the mural.

The Art and Craft show 

For the traditional artists The Awesome Art and Craft Show planning has begun. As this event will be celebrating the completion of the TSLS project any works of art-craft that relate to the flora and fauna of the area would be most appreciated. There is a webpage where details of the event will be housed.

Plants-a-Plenty Purchases

Do you have a spot in your garden that needs filling? Would you like a plant that is perfect for our area and the local wildlife? Would you like to support the local landcare project after the grant has finished? If you answered yes to any of these questions read on.

A selection of local plants are being grown by Hunter Indigenous Plants for locals to purchase at 3 plants for $10. Funds raised will go towards supporting the weekly landcaring projects. They’ll be ready for pick up at the Art and Craft Show. Orders and payment are needed by 30/4/18. Orders can be lodged online or with the hard copy order form available at the members morning tea and in the March Chronicle.

Art and Craft Show returns

Can you believe that it has been six years since the last Art and Craft show at our Hall? It was also the official launch of the six year $250,000 Threatened Species Last Stand on the Coal Point Peninsula (TSLS) project which will be wrapping up in the same way, with an Art and Craft show on the weekend of 29th June-1st July 2018. This rather special community event not only showcases the local artistic talent but it is a fantastic community gathering, definitely a date for the diary!

Mega-Mural on Hunter Water Reservoir

During 1st Term 2018 local youth artists will benefit from the TSLS project with the Hunter Water Reservoir on Whitelocke Street getting a mega-mural makeover by Toronto High School Students, local primary students, local street artists and the community. This showcase of youth talent will transform the graffiti-plagued water tank into a celebration of the local flora and fauna.

• Graffiti Dan will be providing the professional support, mentoring and guiding the artistic endeavours. 
• Origin Energy, the TSLS project, Toronto Lions, Lioness and Sustainable Neighbourhood groups have all offered financial support to make it happen. 
• The mega-mural will culminate in a Youth Week (13-22 Apr) public event with BBQ and a celebration of the completed mural…another date for the diary.

Bush Regeneration

Other project activities that are already underway include 8 days of professional bush regeneration support, four of these at Stansfield Reserve following up from the burn (incl. Nov 29-30) and four days in the narrow reserve that links Laycock Street to Hampton Street, (incl. Dec 13-14). The link reserve will also be the location of the National Tree Day community planting in April-May.

Art & Craft Show thanks

The Art & Craft Show held in November was a huge success and raised $3259.35 that will go to the maintenance of the Hall. The Committee is investigating upgrading of the toilets by way of tiling, installing some secure storage and removing a possum or two from the roof.

Art & Craft Show Immanent

The Art & Craft show opening night on Friday 16th November  celebrates local artistic talent in a community space, Progress Hall. The night brings art loving locals under the one roof to catch up and kick off the festive season. 

This year’s Art & Craft show will provide local artists with a venue to display their works and the community with opportunities to acquire something unique. 

Additionally the Opening Night will officially launch the NSW Environmental Trust Funded Threatened Species Last Stand on the Coal Point peninsula project.

Art & Craft afoot

Planning is well underway for the biennial Arts and Craft Show. The artistically orientated fundraiser is the foundation for securing the necessary dollars to maintain the upkeep and insurances for the community owned Progress Hall.

The Art & Craft show is also a celebration of the local talent and a fun night out full of community camaraderie.

As with all community events enough volunteers are the key to success and support is sought to help out on the event. Mature volunteers, Duke of Edinburgh candidates, High School students undertaking community service projects are all welcome to lend a hand.

The Arts & Craft Show preparations are underway. The organizing Committee have been organising, prizes have been procured, the date set, November 16-18, and the entry forms are printed and being circulated far and wide.

Christmas decorations may be starting emerge however thoughts of next years Arts & Craft show are starting to take up space in the cranial cavities of the organising committee. Welcome to 2011

It’s the Year of the Rabbit and the International Year of Youth and of Forests.These big themes will ripple down to the local level through the activities of the Coal Point Progress Association (CPPA) this year.

The Year of the Rabbit is a time to catch your breath and calm the nerves, with a focus on local relationships and peaceful lifestyles. We'll be doing some local socialising with a Flood Fundraiser in March, planning for the future of the organisation at the AGM on March 7th  and supporting growing your own vegetables through talks and garden visits.

The International Year of Youth is a good time to think about what we can do to support local youth in our community. There are LMCC Youth Week grants open at the moment for activities during Youth Week, April 1-10, the theme is Own It!  Young people 12-24 years old must be involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the events / activities. If you're young and want to help organise a local event come along to a workshop at 6pm at the Hall on Monday 7 February to get ideas and the application underway, which is due on 16/2/11. It won't happen unless you Own It!.

The International Year of Forests will get its share of attention as we continue to landcare in the urban forest which surrounds us. Additionally grant funded projects at Stansfield Close and Yural Reserves will get finished this year and a brochure celebrating our local bushland will be delivered into everyone's letter box.

Since the last Chronicle there have been a few significant occurrences. The Art & Craft show came and went and in the process raised $3400 towards painting the Hall. It was an amazing event with such a wonderful display of local talent filling every corner of the Hall. Congratulations to the sub-committee who did a fantastic job on making it all happen and to everyone who came along and shared in the community joi de vie. Special thanks to Whitakers Jewellers who donated the major raffle prize, and Anacapri and Double Take cafes for the additional prizes.

On the last day of the Art Show there was also a meeting of like minded people interested in helping locals transition into backyard vegetable gardening as part of the Transition Town (TT) project. The Vege-TT-able group was formed and has had its first meeting to plan the project.

At the Lake Macquarie Environmental Excellence in Landcare Awards local landcarer Robyn Garret was recognised for being “continuously and thoughtfully supportive of the work of the Coal Point Landcare Group". Congratulations!

We were also saddened at the loss of a long-term Progress stalwart and gentleman, Geoff Teague, whose talents in cello and calligraphy were often admired and shared. Geoff's local commitments to caring for the Carey Bay wetlands and Chronicle distribution for over 15 years were respected and appreciated. Our condolences go out to Olive and her family.

What ever the reason, the funds raised are going towards the painting of the exterior of Progress Hall, a quote has come in for $8300, and this event is a fundraiser.

You are warmly invited to the Opening Night, from 7.30 p.m.

The Amazing Art and Incredible Craft Show is almost upon us.

Friday 26th November Opening Night 7.30-10.30pm $10 entry

Saturday 27th 10am-5pm gold coin entry

Sunday 28th 10am-2pm  gold coin entry

The anticipation is building as the artists and craftists put the final touches on their passion projects. If you would like to enter art or craft for sale artandcraftcppa@gmail.com is the contact address or phone Barbara 49591259.

On display will be works from award winning local artists such as June Friend, who recently received the Matara Watercolour Prize and Hugh Cross who was Highly Commended at the same event and is providing a piece for Auction on the Friday night

There will be craft ranging from hand crafted cards to jewellery, with teapot painting and hand written verse being created right before your eyes on Saturday.

The Hall will be full of fine things to ponder for presents or   add to your collection.

There is a local flavour to this showcase of talents. 

On Opening Night we’ll be  pondering the question can one live on local wine and bread alone?

Long time sponsors of this newsletter, Carey Bay Cellars will be providing a selection of local wines to sample for a gold coin donation and a variety of local breads will be available for the tasting.

There will also be an opportunity to have your say about what local projects you would like to see the Progress Association pursue over the next year. 

A conversation cafe space will have dot-mocracy technology available to gauge interest, people to chat to and on  Saturday there’ll be beverages and tasty treats to savour whilst pondering the future of The Point.

There are lots of other reasons to come along to the Art & Craft Show, one being it is the major fundraiser for the year with proceeds going towards the painting of the exterior of Progress Hall. Here is the final instalment on the Hall’s history

4/5/1952 Lake Macquarie Shire Council refused to meet a deputation from the Combined Progress Association re: rise in rates and proposed new Council Chambers.

1/6/1952 Bank Balance £989.16.7

3/8/1952 Secretary directed to write to MR Brown asking him the attitude of Lake Macquarie Shire Council on the County plan to resume land on the ridge behind our property on which the hall is located.

7/9/1952 Drain at corner of Rofe Street & Coal Point Road be ordered- re: piped; T.Mayo charged 2% per hall usually 6% 

5/10/1952 Secretary to write to Sgt Griffiths informing him of loss of bricks from Association ground, also vandalism in area.

2/11/1952 Building Committee trying to reduce costs as they thought tenders submitted were too high. Mr T Mayo-Architect is altering specifications accordingly.

7/12/1952 Cash balance £1096.10.5 Official Opening of the Hall be performed by Mr Layton- an appeal for funds and debentures at the opening of the hall.

18/1/1953 Afternoon Tea at the OPENING OF THE HALL. 2/- per person 

An account of £39 architects fees were passed for payment to Mr T Mayo. The entertainment committee will enquire about the purchase of a piano for the hall-Advert in Newcastle Morning Herald for suitable chairs.
