Are you looking for a soft option?

If you don’t shop at Coles then you may not realize that they have something none of the other supermarkets have…a recycling system for soft plastics.

The REDcycle bin collects all the soft plastics that you can’t put in the yellow bin such as bread bags, biscuit packets, frozen food bags, rice and pasta bags, confectionery packets, newspaper wrap, plastic shopping bags and old green bags

The processed materials get converted into outdoor furniture and signage for schools and communities by program partner Replas. It works likes this:

1. YOU COLLECT - Collect all the soft plastics that you can't recycle at home:

2. YOU DROP - Drop them into the REDcycle collection bin at Toronto Coles

3. REDcycle RECYCLES - Your packaging gets recycled into outdoor furniture for schools and communities.

TASNG Update

The Toronto Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group has been meeting monthly, developing projects and applying for funding in partnership with local groups in the recent round of Clubs Grants. An application was submitted with Toronto Tidy Towns for Stage 2 of the Tossers Can Be Binners project which plans for signage, bins and publicity to discourage littering from fast food outlets.

Funding was also sought to enhance pedestrian egress and safety along Brighton Avenue between Ambrose and Jarret Streets and around the Amelia St bends through a collaborative partnership with LMCC and CPPA.

The community garden at The Hub is still humming along with lots of hands-on projects on the to-do list meeting regularly at the Hub on the 1st Saturday of the month from10am-2pm. Their Facebook page has lots of interesting gardening ideas and updates on current projects.

Toronto Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group (TASNG)

The first meeting for the year of the TASNG is set for Wednesday 13 February at 5pm at the Progress Hall. We will be reviewing plans for the year. Each Working Group Team Leader will present a short report. All welcome.

Growers and knitters unite! 16 people turned up to The Boulevarde Community Garden harvest and the knitting session on 19/1/13. A testament to the value of good company, conversation, a bit of food, a common interest and an opportunity to share it all with others.

The next meeting of the Community Gardeners is 2/2/13 at 10am. It is an informal meeting to discuss planting, harvesting and on-going projects of the community garden at the Toronto Senior Citizens Hall.

Community Gardeners Gathering

The Toronto Area Community Gardeners gathered in March to progress this group’s ambitions of supporting local vegetable growing. Some Office bearers were nominated; Secretary: Tricia Hunt, Pubicity Officers: Irina Rantanen and Michelle Teear, TASG Representative: Suzanne Pritchard
In light of the success of our last local get-together, our next growers gathering will be held at the Carey Bay Pony Club grounds off Hampton St, on Saturday 14th April from 4 - 6pm.
Bring some snags to put on the BBQ, a picnic rug and plants and produce to swap.
We will hold an initial brainstorming session of what you would like our community garden to be, so get thinking!
And to make it all a reality, we still have one committee position to fill of Chair Person: Duties will include chairing regular meetings as a per nominated agenda, liaison with council, and other general duties as negotiated by the committee. If you think you may be the ideal candidate (no previous experience required), then please consider nominating yourself for the roll.
Friends, family and children all welcome!
BYO Frisbee or boules
If you know anyone else who may be interested in a local community garden, please bring them along
