Progress Hall Working Bee & Bulk Wastes Changes

Progress Hall Working Bee
- Saturday 2/4/22 @9am - noon

We like to have a bit of a working bee at our community owned hall twice a year to align with council clean ups, and we haven’t had one for quite a while due to COVID, so we’re very excited to be back on track for Saturday 2nd April, 9 till noon. If you use the hall or like the concept of a community owned-hall we’d love to have your helping hands.

One of the activities we’ll be considering as we clean is can we donate any of the items that are additional to our needs to those in need in flood-affected areas.

There’ll be lots of activities to keep busy hands active as we clean anything that isn’t tied down, and active minds busy as we arrange our possessions into the most efficient space possible.

Whilst there’ll be committee members at the hall it’s also a chance to drop in and join the CPPA and have a cuppa with the crew at 10:30.

Membership forms and people to talk to will both be present.

If you’re considering coming along please RSVP to coalpointprogress@gmail.com so we can plan the productivity of the session.

Bulk Waste Service about to Change

Council is planning changes to its bulk waste service. There’s an opportunity to join an information session with Council staff to talk about future changes to the bulk waste service on Tuesday 22 March, 5pm, Online via MS Teams. The session will cover:
  • What prompted a review of Lake Mac’s bulk waste service
  • What we learned in our investigations
  • What we’re proposing for the future
  • Answering your questions
  • Your feedback on the planned changes
To receive the meeting link please rsvp via email to admin@sustainableneighbourhoods.org.au

CPPA snippets

Social enthusiasts required for a night to re-member 9/11/19

The CPPA is keen to hold an end of year members event, that is social, fun and brings everyone together at the Hall. An opportunity to catch up with neighbours and spread some community joi de vie around the seasonal summer celebrations.

We need a few keen social enthusiasts to help with the organising of the event. If you’d like to get involved in organising this one-off community celebration please get in touch with Suzanne by 4/10/19 coalpointprogress@gmail.com

Thieves are about - A local’s warning

We recently had a garden statute (a Buddhist Thai Angel) 50cm high stolen from outside
our front door. The thief had to come the 20m up our driveway to get it and then carry it away - it was metal and a little heavy. So he/she was determined!

Please be aware that there is a brazen thief out there in our community.

Musical Moments for Members and more…

Put aside Saturday 9th November for a community get together with a musical theme. Whether it’s tickling your tonsils or the ivories we’re looking for performers and practitioners.

Do you like a sing-along…let us know the tune we can create a community chorus.

Can you play a piano...there are two to choose from!

Are you in a band…there’s a stage to strut you stuffJ

This end of year social is a chance to meet the members of your community, get your friends to join in and join up, make some music and let your heart if not your voice sing.

If you’d like to perform or would like to hear a unique rendition of your favourite song please get in touch with Suzanne, coalpointprogress@gmail.com.

Save the date Saturday 9th November, 5-8pm.

Members Welcome and Wanted

The 2019 Progress year is swinging into action with a Members Morning on Saturday 23rd February. The drop in session, any time from 8:30am till 12:30pm will be a very social and welcoming event.

You’ll be able to
  • join the CPPA / TASNG and pay your membership fees, the membership form is here.
  • meet the committee and discuss potential projects for the year
  • purchase a native plant for only $2.50ea
  • get assistance with nasty or nice plant ID
  • hear about the solar and air-con installation story and
  • To finish up the social there’ll be a BBQ.
This year the CPPA is looking to be quite social, using the hall to bring the community together. The immanent addition of reverse cycle air-con will mean that the comfort level will be able to be maintained all year round as well. We are looking for people interested to be on a social subcommittee.

Other thought bubbles that would be good to explore include a community event, The Coal-Carey Carnival at Hampton St reserve (aka the Pony Club/Carey Bay Wetlands), car-boot sales and the concept of a Coal Point – Carey Bay Conservancy, a land purchasing scheme to secure corridor connections along with providing sustainable and social housing.

The Annual General Meeting will be held on 11th March where the plans for the year will be put forward. It would be great to discuss any potential projects at the member’s morning.

Will you support what we do?

The CPPA invests hundreds of hours every month in activities and projects that directly benefit our community.

Providing the DA updates in the Chronicle alone is a day a month to process the list and follow up on what’s been happening, the Chronicle production and distribution another 2 days a month, landcaring our local reserves 100+ hours a month, looking after the Hall, it is our community’s asset not Council owned, more hours a month. On top of that there is the governance of the organization, applying for funding and managing the grants and coordinating hall bookings.

The CPPA membership is one way to show your support for what we do on the community’s behalf. The funds generated from membership provide a baseline for our income so we know how much more money we need to secure throughout the year to cover the ongoing costs associated with the owning an asset such as the Hall. Big ticket items such as council rates ($3500) and insurance ($3800) are a financial challenge but also known.

The Progress financial year is a calendar year and we are looking understand our fundraising needs for 2017. The constitution outlines our purpose and is online .

Membership fees are $8pp or $13/family with a $2pp option to join the Toronto Area Sustainable Neighbourhood group.

Membership fees and applications can be lodged in the Treasurer’s secure letterbox at 235 Coal Point Rd or posted to PO Box 329 Toronto. There is also a membership form available online to print out. If you don't have a proposer or seconder don't worry, we can attend to that at the monthly meeting.

With your support we can keep doing what we do!

Memorable members

Alf Jones polishing the refurbished table at the Hall
It is with much sadness that we acknowledge the passing of two Progress members Roy Thompson and Alf Jones. On behalf of the Progress members thoughts of peace and strength go out to the families of Alf and Roy.
Alf was a stalwart Committee member for many years attending to the maintenance of Progress Hall and overseeing the major refurbishment with the local lads during 2007.
Alf’s generosity of time and skills, smile and beautiful heart will be greatly missed.
