Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world. For, indeed, that's all who ever have- Margaret Mead
Congratulations to ‘Greater Toronto’ local Joan Coulton who received
Australia Day Honours with The
Order of Australia for service to the community of Lake Macquarie.
Joan’s inspirational and entrepreneurial
leadership skills have contributed to, and played a pivotal role in the
establishment and the ongoing success of many community organisations in the
Lake Macquarie area.
In 1975 Joan initiated and formed the Catalina
Players, produced 12 of the first 13 productions, and performed in each one.
Her vision, creativity and success in fostering teamwork provided the
foundation for a vibrant and dynamic group that still performed regularly until
2014.
Following the introduction of the NSW Anti
Discrimination Act in 1977, Joan’s powerful sense of social justice was
exemplified with successful application for full membership of the Rathmines
Bowling Club. This caused an enormous fracas within the Club
membership. For Joan and other female members, this gave access to all
Club facilities and operations previously available only to male members.
As a Steering Committee member in 1992, and in
1993 - 1994 as the inaugural President of Toronto Macquarie Ladies Probus Club,
Joan was the catalyst for a strong and active membership from its
inception.
in 1994, Joan’s zest and dynamic enthusiasm
benefitted the Steering Committee of the Lake Macquarie University of the Third
Age (U3A). The service was incorporated on 21st December 1994,
with Joan as the President, a position she held for three years. This highly
successful U3A opened with a record membership of 105, offering four courses.
It now offers 70 courses per semester and has a membership of 700.
