TASNG News

A plus for Pedestrians

The Toronto Area Sustainable Neighbourhood group received a Christmas present as well. They were awarded a Community Building Partnership grant for $8700 to improve pedestrian access and safety between Ambrose and Jarrett by installing crushed gravel and other suitable surfaces. LMCC agreed to match the funding.
This grant is a huge step forward in improving pedestrian access in our community, with no plans in the next 20 years for footpaths it looks like it will be community initiatives such as this that will provide the best chance of getting a safe place to walk. This project will be a model that will hopefully support other groups and other areas looking to address the same issue.

Tossers can be Binners 2

Toronto High School students entered a competition to design some signs for a Clean-up Australia Day Campaign on 6th March 2016, involving the fast food restaurants in Toronto. Three of those signs were chosen to be made into metal signs and these will be displayed on bins and driveways of those restaurants. McDonalds franchise in Toronto, in particular, has joined the campaign and a media event will take place there on March 6 to educate the public that Tossers Can Be Binners and fast food rubbish detracts from our area and impacts on the health of the lake.

FAST-FOOD LITTER TOSSERS CAN BE BINNERS-STAGE 2

Over the next 12 months the Toronto Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group (TASNG), in conjunction with Toronto Tidy Towns and Toronto Workers Club, will be running a campaign to address fast-food rubbish littering public roads and areas around Toronto and its impact of the lake environment. There is provisional approval for the campaign from all the fast-food operators in Toronto-McDonalds, Henny Penny, Dominos, Subway and Pizza Hut.
A sign for the times
TASNG is calling on artistic Toronto High School students to design a sign for the Tossers Can Be Binners campaign. The aim is to raise awareness of the impact of fast-food rubbish in the Toronto area.
TASNG will offer two $50 shopping vouchers to the best designed signs to be used as part of our fast-food litter campaign which will be launched at Clean-up Australia Day, March 6, 2016, at Toronto McDonalds.
The signs need to have a slogan like “Don’t be a Tosser” or “Tossers can be Binners”. They will be converted into metal signs with an anti-graffiti coating and mounted at the various fast-food restaurants or nearby metal bins around Toronto.

Tossers can be Binners were Grinners

The successful completion of the Tossers can be Binners project has seen community funded twin recycling bins officially opened, drains stenciled, an EcoAngels litter survey undertaken and 350 reusable bags distributed to celebrate the completion of the Tossers can Be Binners project.
The past nine months has seen a transformation of one of Toronto’s grot-spots thanks to $8000 from Toronto Workers Club and $5000 from Keep Australia Beautiful ” said Steve Dewar- Toronto Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group’s Waste projects coordinator.
The bins are so successful they are regularly brimming with rubbish and the mural is an outstanding reminder that we can all make a difference. The most recent litter survey produced only ½ kg of litter compared to 20kg last September.

Tossers can be Binners

There are changes a foot both locally and federally in dealing with litter.
On our doorstep the Toronto Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group is doing its bit and doing the right thing, having secured funding to install new recycling bins in the Aldi-Woolworths area, cleaning up the litter in the carpark gardens, addressing graffiti and planting to make the area more attractive.

At the National level on the 5/12/13 Australia’s environment ministers will make a decision on the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS). You can be a part of history.

Dear Cash for Containers Supporter,
Australia currently wastes 8 billion containers every year – and we all know where many end up – on our roads, parks, beaches and in the ocean.  It is time to implement a proven solution.

The beverage industry led by Coke, are spending millions of dollars on advertising to defeat our campaign.  They began on 14 October and it's still going.  They are feeling the heat.

We can win if we show the ministers what the community wants - and New South Wales can lead the way. Here’s how you can help:
