Landcare Report - by Robyn Gill

About 7 years ago a group of cubs worked for a day at Carey Bay Wetlands next to their Scout Hall. With their Cub Leader and me (in my Landcare shirt for a photo for proof ) they weeded around a planting that had been done for  National Tree Day the previous year. This was the first of a series of plantings that has filled in where a great mass of Blackberry, Wild Rose and many other assorted serious weeds had taken over where a dairy farm had once been.

The cubs’ work for their Landcare Badge that day was part of a project encouraged by Suzanne Pritchard, in her science educator role, to create a natural zone along the bank of “our” creek (Puntei) within the Scout Hall land adjoining our work.

Lachlan

In 2012 one of those cubs, Lachlan Adams, decided on Landcare  as one of his Duke of Edinburgh Award projects and has completed 26 weeks of 1 hour sessions working with our group in Coal Point Reserves. He has been a willing and thoughtful worker so we have appreciated his help. Lach has now completed his online log with impressive detail of his sessions of Landcare work detailing the targeted weeds, plantings , who he worked with and some details of the reasons for the work. He has even worn out a pair of new gloves and we had to feed him Flakes so he would make it up the hill to home on his bike.

We’re hoping Lachlan will go on to the next level of the Award and choose Landcare as a project but with Year 11 for a high achiever and his other Award units (eg sailing) to fit in, we wish him well whatever his choice.
